Athletics fields

The grounds of Baker Field Athletics Complex are nearing a complete makeover to ensure their long-term durability and quality of play for athletes. In 2005, Columbia became the first Ivy League school to install the premier artificial surface FieldTurf, when it replaced the field at Lawrence A. Wein Stadium. In October 2007—with generous gifts from New England Patriots owner and onetime Columbia lightweight football player Robert Kraft (CC’63) and Board of Trustees Chair Bill Campbell (CC’62, TC’64), Lions’ onetime varsity football coach—it became known as Kraft Field. All Columbia men’s and women’s field sports are getting the same first-class treatment under foot. In 2006, the University unveiled a dedicated field hockey venue with the installation of a polypropylene turf designed specifically for the sport. In 2007, the newest FieldTurf surface—the same one now used at Giants Stadium—was installed at Columbia Soccer Stadium and at Columbia’s baseball field.
