Columbia UniversityThe President's Report 2002-2007
A Message from the President
Since 2002, I have had the good fortune to work with Columbia students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends to guide our University through a period of profound institutional and global change. In this important undertaking, we have tried to build on Columbia’s history of leadership as the quintessential great urban university, evolving to respond to the contemporary issues facing our ever-changing city and world, while also remaining true to our core values of teaching, research, patient care, and public service.

We are, by almost any measure, flourishing. This momentum has inspired us to imagine and lay the groundwork for a future Columbia that will not only expand the boundaries of knowledge, but do so in increasingly diverse, interdisciplinary, and collaborative ways. From understanding the forces of globalization to grasping life through the prism of a gene or a molecule, to expressing human yearnings through the arts—in all of the areas calling out for intellectual attention at the highest levels, we are assembling strengths unique among the very best universities in the world.

At the same time, never before has the University done so much simultaneously to improve the quality and accessibility of a Columbia education, all while planning for the long-term space needs to ensure that education’s quality and vitality for generations to come. In broadening and deepening our commitment to New York City, we have also taken steps to become a more active, engaged, and environmentally conscious citizen and neighbor in a vibrant urban community that is an essential part of our identity. For our faculty and students to help solve the sustainability challenges of our planet, we are starting to transform our physical campus into a sustainable partner for the future.

In these and countless other ways, we have in recent years worked to recognize and embrace Columbia’s opportunities for academic, civic, and global leadership in this century. Thank you for taking time to view this Web site as a record of this collaborative endeavor. I hope you also see and hear in it our shared energy and optimism for realizing our extraordinary potential in the years ahead to ensure Columbia’s historic place among the world’s great universities.

Sincerely,

Lee C. Bollinger
